UPDATE: Obama Assassination Plot Suspect Interviewed

See my first post on this HERE.

UPDATE: CBS4, a Denver radio station, reported that one of the suspects told authorities they were “going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a ... rifle." When one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama", a CBS4 source said, “he responded in the affirmative."

Fox News reported that the three men might have links to Sons of Silence, an outlaw motorcycle group, and white supremacists.

Two rifles, one with a telescopic sight, walkie-talkies, a bulletproof vest, licenses in the names of other people and methamphetamine were found in a truck that was stopped on Sunday morning.

Tharin Gartrell, 28, was in the rented pick-up truck when he was pulled over in Aurora, a Denver suburb, for driving in an erratic manner.

Police then went to the Cherry Creek Hotel in Denver, to pursue Shawn Robert Adolph, 33, who was already wanted on numerous warrants. Adolph jumped out of a sixth floor hotel window, breaking an ankle, and was arrested. Police sources said he was wearing a swastika and is suspected of having ties to white supremacist organisations.

A third man, Nathan Johnson, 32 (he's the one in the video clip above), an associate of Gartrell and Adolph, was also arrested and is said to have told police that the two men "planned to kill Barack Obama at his acceptance speech."

The Secret Service, FBI and the US Joint Terrorism Task Force are all investigating the alleged plot.

Cher As Catwoman In Next Batman Movie?

I'm sure your immediate response was very similar to mine - HUH???? April Fools' day was almost 5 months ago!

Alas, it just might come to fruition, and might even make sense, once you get the rest of the story.

According to the UK Telegraph, "the 62-year-old singer and actress is reported to be in talks to play Catwoman opposite Christian Bale in the third Batman film from British director Christopher Nolan."

The article quotes a studio executive as saying that Cher is Nolan's first choice to play Catwoman. "He wants to her to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years... the absolute opposite of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry's purring creations."

So, essentially, Catwoman post her active, leotard wearing, whip lashing days? Sounds intriguing actually, but doesn't that stray from the established characterization of Catwoman in all the comic books and previous cartoons and movies? She has always been portrayed as parallel to Batman, within his age group, evolving as he evolved, much like the Joker, and has even been somewhat of a love interest. If the Telegraph's report is accurate, new rules would have to be developed regarding her character's career, motivations and relationship to Batman, as well as her alter ego's (Selina Kyle's) relationship to Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne. Maybe she'll be something like a cougar!! :o)

Regardless, anything would be better than the Catwoman Halle Berry gave us a few years ago. We need something to erase that vision from memory. Might it come in the form of Cher? I haven't seen much of her lately, but she's always been one to maintain near-perfect physical form, so I'm sure that's still the case, even at 62, and donning some black tights and high heels, brandishing a whip, might actually look just fine on her! Her last prominent role was in 1999's Tea With Mussolini. She's done some TV work since then, but for the most part, she's been invisible.

Thoughts?

Poster - 'Indie Film Blogger' Documentary

Above is "quite possibly the final poster for the documentary" by Sujewa Ekanayake, which I am a part of and wrote about HERE. If you look really close, you'll find me in there somewhere :o)

Miss Sister 2008 - Bringing "Sexy" To The Catholic Church

Haha... I couldn't help but be humored by this. A beauty pageant for nuns... organized by a priest?? Why? To fight the stereotype that nuns are all old and dour, says Rev. Antonio Rungi, an Italian theologian.

So, let me get this straight... the priest is essentially pimping his nuns? Does the Pope know about this?

The story goes... the good Reverend said on Sunday that he is organizing an online beauty pageant for nuns.
The "Miss Sister 2008" contest will start in September on a blog run by the Reverend and will give nuns from around the world a chance to showcase their work and their image.

Rungi said that... visitors to his site will have a month to "vote for the nun they consider a model."
Nuns will fill out a profile including information about their life and vocation as well as a photograph. It will be up to them to choose whether to pose with the traditional veil or with their heads uncovered.

"We are not going to parade nuns in bathing suits," Rungi said. "But being ugly is not a requirement for becoming a nun. External beauty is gift from God, and we mustn't hide it." He hopes there will be dozens of submissions once the Web site is started.

I'm sure there will be lots and lots of criticism following this.

Despite my strict Catholic upbringing, I find the entire thing hilarious! It's counter to much that was beaten into my head as a child. I empathize with the priest's intent, but isn't this just a kind of objectification of the nuns? There's a reason why they wear their habits. What's next? Nun calendars?

The Bin Laden Bridge - Connecting Africa And Asia

I foresee a day when every continent will be connected by some man-made land mass - specifically a bridge - as unfathomable as that might sound in 2008. A time will come when one will be able to drive the 3000 or so miles from New York City to Lisbon, Portugal, much like we drive cross-country from the east coast to California. And train tracks will likely follow... chug... chug... chug...

I found this intriguing report on the Spiegel International website:

Osama bin Laden's brother is choosing a different path to prominence. Sheikh Tarik bin Laden wants to build a gigantic suspension bridge which would connect Africa to Asia.

Tarik’s bridge would cross the Bab el Mandeb, the narrow straits where the Indian Ocean feeds into the Red Sea. Bearing a six-lane highway, a railway line and an oil pipeline, the structure would stretch fully 29 kilometers (18 miles) between continents -- an unprecedented piece of engineering. Huge pillars would have to be anchored to the sea floor some 300 meters (984 feet) below the surface. They would be spaced three kilometers apart.

The bridge alone will cost $25 billion... Sheikh Tarik himself plans to invest $10 billion of his own money.

But one question hasn't yet been answered: Why? Sheikh Tarik isn't saying. Doubts, in short, are plentiful, but Tarik's spokesman insisted that the project would be underway by next year at the latest -- a start that will be quickly followed by a ferry service and a cement factory. But if all goes well, by 2025, the area will look radically different...

Obama Assassination Attempt Foiled!

I'd like to be able to say that this isn't indicative of what we can expect, especially if he does become our next president... but I don't think I can, unfortunately. Suffice it to say he'll need triple the protection than any previous president ever received!

From HuffPo (NewsWeek also posted an entry on this):

Mainstream media are now confirming, and going beyond, the initial reports this evening of a possible assassination plot against Barack Obama and the arrest of two men.
Following up an earlier TV report, NBC in Denver is now reporting, "Sources tell NBC the two men had tattoos and jewelry popular with white supremacists."

It also notes that an unidentified source tells NBC, "There is no reason for someone [with a criminal record] to have rifles with scopes."
The Denver Post has just led its Web piece with: "Federal authorities have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday afternoon amid reports that a fortunate traffic stop by Aurora Police may have disrupted an assassination attempt against Barack Obama."

Firearms and methamphetamine were seized.

The earlier TV report from KUSA-TV in Denver kicked off with, "Federal authorities have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday afternoon amid reports that a fortunate traffic stop by Aurora Police may have disrupted an assassination attempt against Barack Obama.
The first man, identified by the station as Tharin Gartrell, 28, was charged with suspicion of being a felon in possession of a weapon after police found two rifles, a high-powered scope and methamphetamine in his car after the traffic stop. TMZ.com now has his mug shot.

When police accompanied Gartrell to his hotel in Glendale, a second man jumped from a window and was injured in a four-story fall, according to the station. That man was then arrested, but has not been identified by police.

"The Secret Service, ATF and the FBI are all involved in the investigation.

Cheadle's Traitor; Ice Cube's Longshots

Soooooo... Don Cheadle's foray into Bond/Bourne territory (titled Traitor) opens this Wednesday in the USA. I assume most of us are planning on checking it out, if only out of curiosity to see what he can do with the genre. I'll certainly see it, although, as I said in a previous post, the PG-13 rating is a turn-off. But then again, so were the Bond/Bourne offerings, and I mostly enjoyed those.

By the way, did anyone see The Longshots this past weekend? Ice Cube's "inspirational" family-friendly football dramedy? I didn't, but I'd like to get some first, second and third impressions, if any.

Watch Studio Feature Films And TV Online For FREE!

Yes, there's more. I've already told you about sites where you can watch documentaries online for free as well as read magazines online, also for free. Now you can also watch feature-length studio films online for FREE! The site has been around for about a year, but I don't know if many people know about it. I've used it a few times, and been content with each experience, each time connecting my laptop to a digital projector and using my apartment wall as a screen. It works for me!

Hulu.com was founded in March 2007 by NBC Universal and Murdoch's News Corp, so most, if not all the films available on the site are from the libraries of both media giants and their subsidiaries. The selection is still rather limited, which I guess should be expected, given how young the site is, and how ambivalent studios have been to make their prized products available on the web, whether for free or at a cost. And it's a business model that I think still isn't well understood. As expected, while the screenings are free, there are commercials about every 15 minutes - but each break was often no more than about 15 seconds... at most 30 seconds, so, I was able to tolerate them, and I think you will too.

Some worthwhile films you can watch for FREE on the site right now include: 28 Days Later, Men In Black, the original Casino Royale (1967), Lost In Translation, The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three (The original 1973 version. Denzel Washington is starring in a remake currently in production with a 2009 release date scheduled), Sideways, Requiem For A Dream, Hollywood Shuffle, Groundhog Day, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, amongst many others.

You can also watch television shows dating back to the 60s; I've especially had fun seeing some of my favorites from childhood, like Different Strokes, Fantasy Island, The A-Team and Alf!

So head on over to Hulu.com right now! I'm sure you'll find something you like.

Tambay Got A Mac!

"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do." Steve Jobs (Apple CEO) 1997

Well, I suppose I've officially become one of the crazy ones, one of the misfits, one of the rebels, one of those who sees things differently... not fond of rules, etc, etc, etc... Although, I think I always was :o)

Look what I just bought! While I won't claim to now be a "Mac" guy, I am definitely enjoying my new toy.

Web Serial Killers

As an addendum to my post just below this one on new distribution solutions for indie filmmakers, specifically giving attention to the possibilities the Internet provides, I found this related worthwhile New York Times piece (courtesy of the Filmmaker Mag blog), titled "Serial Killers," referring of course to online serials.

I've been toying with the idea of producing a web serial myself, and I still very much plan on sounding off in my own way, within that specific medium, so watch this space. However, this NY Times article is somewhat dampening.

Here's a snippet:

"Time will tell, but right now Web serials — no matter how revealing, provocative or moving — seem to be a misstep in the evolution of online video. Introduced with fanfare again and again only to miss big viewerships, shows like “Satacracy 88” and “Cataclysmo” have emerged as the slow, conservative, overpriced cousins to the wildly Web-friendly “viral videos” that also arrived around 2005, when bandwidth-happy Web users began to circulate scrap video and comedy clips as if they were chain letters or strep. Top virals — “I Got a Crush . . . on Obama,” “Don’t Tase Me, Bro!” “Chocolate Rain” — never plod. They come off like brush fires, outbursts, accidents, flashes of sudden unmistakable truth. By contrast, Web serials smack of planning and budgets and all that vestigial Hollywood stuff."

AND...

"The French artist and filmmaker Jean Cocteau once decried the high barriers to making movies, suggesting that the cost of cameras, film, editing machines and other equipment had inhibited filmmakers by making them too nervous about bottom lines. “Film will only become art,” he proposed, “when its materials are as inexpensive as paper and pencil.” When Cocteau died in 1963, he must have been confident that his hypothesis would never be tested. But with 13 hours of video uploaded every minute on YouTube, the Cocteau test is now fully under way. So where’s the true art? I’m not sure. I know I continue to prefer the strange, beautiful, comical and mysterious stuff of YouTube — the unclassifiable stuff — to the laudable efforts at nouveau serials by bona fide directors. But I still believe that, one day, another serial — not called a serial, maybe, and certainly not webisodes — will exploit the eccentricity of the virals and manage to make new and serious jokes about the truth-illusion-truth-illusion of cinéma vérité, which is what “lonelygirl15” once did. With that, the thrill of filmed “reality” will be returned to viewers, as it was in the early days of film, radio and television."

I will not be deterred damnit!! :o)

Do Festivals Still Matter? Solutions

Over at Variety Magazine's website, Christian Gaines, formerly of the American Film Institute, and currently with Withoutabox, contributed a two-part piece on festivals, asking whether they still matter, the standard indie film theatrical distribution model, and offers potential solutions.

Part one is titled "
Do Festivals Matter?", and part two is "Things Gotta Change," where he suggests what he calls, a "Festival Acquisition" model, stating, "In the new “Festival Acquisition” model a sales agent or producer might send a film on a six to ten month tour of sixty to eighty North American film festivals. Absent of commercial venues, if film festivals have become the ad hoc distribution infrastructure for these films - and the film in question might see 250 screenings - then a formal business proposition will emerge, one in which rights holders and film festivals each acknowledge the other’s challenges. In this proposition, several things could start to happen: smaller and mid-size festivals that have previously been shut out of the possibility of securing quality international fare are suddenly back in the game. Quality goes up and regional U.S. audiences have a shot at seeing new works by the masters. Rights holders request a minimum guarantee versus a % of ticket sales (already nothing new), and festivals must weigh up their screening slots and total number of seats and figure out if the proposition makes economic sense."

I think we can all agree that the web presents us (indie filmmakers) with the most promising prospects. The challenge now is finding some strategy that works for our individual projects. What works for one may not necessarily work for the other. Is content really still king... the right kind of marketing hook can work wonders for even the weakest product. Just ask this guy!

World War III

I don't know about the rest of you folks, but since Russia flexed its military muscle in Georgia 2 weeks ago, an unsettling, cautious sensation planted its roots in the pit of my stomach, and hasn't gone away since then.

The response from the USA, the EU and NATO haven't done much to ease my anxieties. Paternal-like threats from Bush and Secretary of State Condie Rice, stating that, "Russia is playing a very dangerous game with the US and must be punished," seem to me rather combative and unnecessary, especially since it's not entirely clear who initiated this recent conflict between Georgia and Russia.

May I remind Bush and Rice that Russia is not Iraq, nor Iran, nor Afghanistan. They are certainly capable and will likely hit back if threatened with any sort of American, or other military advances. Referring to, or dealing with them in a kind of subordinate manner certainly won't sit very well with Medvedev nor Putin. Surely we must recognize the hypocrisy of it all, given our invasion, occupation and subjugation of Iraq. Imagine if Russia and the EU voiced disapproval and vehemently stated that America must be punished for its war crimes in the Middle East!

But I'm not naive. Being the world's bully... I mean, being the world's "super power" certainly has its "privileges," if we can even call them that. However, a little less hubris and instead more humility are in order.

So, don't get too comfortable.

I walk the streets of New York, watching the movement of seemingly happy, pleased people, eating, drinking, shopping, living relatively uncomplicated lives, compared to those in other worlds, and I shake my head as I wonder if we all realize that there are wars going on - many that we are knee-deep in, as thousands have died, and continue to die, for causes that still haven't been clearly defined. I look around me and I think to myself, one wouldn't even be able to tell that we are at war.

The world might be a beautiful and radiant place, but it's infested with egomaniacs and megalomaniacs who are driven almost solely by greed, and unfortunately, they are usually the few in power, intent on keeping their constituents oblivious of the goings on behind the curtain.

I came across this piece by Simon Jenkins at Huffington Post:

We Tilt at Windmills as World War Looms
Is the world drifting towards a new global war? From this week the dominant super-power, America, will for three months pass through the valley of the shadow of democracy, a presidential election. This is always a moment of self-absorption and paranoia. Barack Obama and John McCain will not act as statesmen but as politicians. They will grandstand and look over their shoulders. Their eye will stray from the ball. Meanwhile, along history's fault line of conflict from Russia's European border to the Caucasus and on to Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, diplomats are shifting uneasily in their seats, drums are sounding and harsh words are spoken. The world is now run by a generation of leaders who have never known global war. Has this dulled their senses? Dan McNeill, an American general, was recently interviewed in Kabul on how to beat the Taliban. He was not the first to conclude that this could not be done militarily but only by "winning hearts and minds". The problem, he said, lay in the answer to the question, "Whose hearts and minds?" Was it those of the Afghan people or was it rather those of the American Congress and voters? Both Obama and McCain have claimed that the war in Iraq has been allowed to distract attention from the war in Afghanistan. This is different from the neoconservatives, who felt the war in Afghanistan was a distraction from the more important war in Iraq. America now thinks it has won in Baghdad and must return to Kabul - and possibly even Tehran. At the same time it must face the possibility that these conflicts may in turn be a distraction from the reemergence as world powers of Russia and China, who are already gaining the initiative in Iran and Africa. Moscow is also precipitating a nationalist resurgence in eastern Europe and among Russian minorities in the Caucasus. The question is critical. Has the West misjudged the fault line of an impending conflict?

If You're Obese, Get Ready To Start Paying Fines

According to an article in Time Magazine, the state of Alabama, unhappy with its second place position in national obesity rankings, intends to reverse course towards healthier living for its constituents by implementing what some are calling a controversial law that would require all obese state employees to pay $25 per month for health insurance costs - a fee they've never had to pay before, since they are government employees, with free health insurance as part of their benefits package.

Government statistics show Alabamians have a weight problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30.3 percent are now obese, ranking the state behind only Mississippi.

I guess the strategy here is to hit them where it hurts the most - their wallets and purses - until they work their bodies into more "acceptable standards," based on the nationally accepted BMI index. A BMI of 30 is considered the threshold for obesity.

State employees will be required to go through annual health screenings to test their blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels and for obesity. And those who fail the tests will have to enroll in a fitness program, or take steps on their own to improve their health. If they show progress in a follow-up screening, they won't be charged. But if they don't, they must pay $25 monthly starting in January 2011.

Of course, this doesn't sit very well with those fine men and women of Alabama, and complaints have already been registered. However, it looks like it's a done deal, and they'll have to comply... or move to another state... although it's possible that other states could adopt a similar policy, especially given recent national concerns over the overall health of Americans, with a significant number considered obese.

Proponents of big government will likely champion the idea. Others... not so much. I can hear cries of "big brother" coming from the right. A police state is only a few statutes away.

Will it work in the long run? I doubt it! Obesity is an illness as far as I'm concerned, and should be treated as such. It's practically an epidemic now, if you believe the CDC's numbers. This kind of legislation only trivializes it I think, and might actually backfire.

Imagine if it was a nationwide law - the BMI index becomes THE standard by which we all are judged... every American is required to get themselves checked out every year, and the results of their tests are sent to some governing body for verification... and those with BMI's of over 30 are required to enroll in some government approved wellness program, to nurse themselves back to acceptable health standards or pay a monthly fine for as long as they are over the BMI limit. An obvious follow-up question would be, what if someone refuses to do any or all 3 - refuses to have an annual check-up, refuses to get themselves into a wellness program, or refuses to pay the fine? What happens to them then? Will they get thrown in jail for failing to comply? How far will the government go to see its policies enacted?

What do you think?

Barack And Biden Sittin' In A Tree...

So, as I'm sure you've all already heard or read, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Hussein Obama II announced his selection for vice president earlier this morning - an expected choice in Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr., senator from Delaware.

Is that a collective yawn I hear...

Given all the build-up and anticipation of who Obama's choice would be, I was expecting, hoping that he'd surprise and excite us with an unexpected, intriguing selection - like maybe a woman, especially after his fallout with Hillary supporters, or someone the caliber and stature of an Al Gore - not Biden.

Biden might be experienced, but he doesn't quite fit Obama's call for a new order... change we can believe in. He's still a member of the "old guard" as far as I'm concerned. But maybe that's what Obama needs to compliment his candidacy. Time will tell.

Now that Obama has shown his cards, it gives McCain a bit of an edge, I think, because he could be thinking the same thing that I'm thinking, and really surprise us with his selection - maybe choose an independent, a woman, or even an African American; unlikely, since Joe Lieberman (the traitor) seems to be the name that's on most lips. But, all eyes will now be watching in anticipation of McCain's eventual pick.

So it goes... it's Obama/Biden in 2008! Get used to it!

Olympics: Slippery Hands

Wow! What are the chances that BOTH the American men and women 4X100 relay teams would have baton exchange woes on the same leg, disqualifying both teams before the finals, despite leading in both scenarios, heading towards the homestretch to certain gold medal wins? I'm surprised no one is calling for an investigation into a potential "fix." Is gambling allowed in the Olympics? If so, someone just made a killing :o)

P.S. the thighs on the women sprinters are incredible! Damn!

There Will Be Blood... A Little

Clearly the Democrats plan on milking McCain's recent gaffe for as long as they can...

Read Magazines Online For FREE!

You know me... I'm always looking for free shit :o)

Here's another FREE online service that some of you might find useful.

It's a new site (launched in July I believe) called Mygazines.com. Based on its name, I'm sure you can guess what it's purpose is. In short, Mygazines.com is a website where you can read magazines for FREE! You can also share (whether via email or social bookmarking), archive and customize specific articles within those magazines you read.

Printed magazines are uploaded in whole, from the cover to cover - even the ads - and you can read them on the site using its convenient flipbook feature, which also allows you to zoom in and out, to read any tiny print.

Since it's a new site, don't expect to find every single kind of magazine in circulation, but there's enough there to tickle your appetite in expectation of what's to come. You can also upload magazines you own, especially those that aren't already on the site. So, think of it as a kind of file sharing site, except the files being shared are magazines. The quality of the images aren't pristine, but certainly good enough to read and appreciate - even for the optically-challenged. Did I mention it's a FREE site?

Pick from a variety of categories - Arts & Culture, Automotive, Computers & Internet, Electronics & Audio, Entertainment & TV, Home & Garden, News, Business & Money, Sports, Travel, and more.

At a quick glance I saw listings for the most recent editions of Times, Vanity Fair, Ebony, Oprah, Car & Driver, BusinessWeek, Cosmopolitan, Vibe, Wired, PC Magazine, MacWorld, Popular Photography, FHM, Maxim, Popular Science, Newsweek, Forbes and The Economist amongst man others. I also saw several weekly publications, like People Magazine, National Enquirer, Us Weekly, Entertainment Weekly, and others.

And if you missed a past issue of a magazine, they have some of those as well... for example, if you didn't read the now infamous New Yorker magazine issue that had the Obama's caricatured on the cover, you can read all 100 pages of that edition on the site, for free.

There's also a nifty "subscribe" feature which is self-explanatory.

And the selections aren't solely American. The site claims a library that's global, although limited, meaning you could read the most current issue of Der Spiegel, provided you're fluent in German, or you can flip through the pages of La Provence, as long as French isn't foreign to you. Or, you can read the Indian version of Vogue! I didn't even know that there was an Indian version of Vogue! Scary.

So, check out Mygazines why don't you! You might find something you like. I expect that magazine publishers will soon come calling with lawsuits and such, assuming the creators of the site don't have the legal rights to make the magazines available on the site, especially for free.

Let George Clooney Buy You A New Car!

This is probably the ONLY time you'll ever hear me say that I wouldn't mind being "rear-ended" by George Clooney!

That's right - of course I'm talking about a different kind of "rear-ending"... the bumper to bumper variety... as in automobile accident! What the fuck did you think I meant?

Anyway... the story goes... George Clooney, 2-time People Magazine Sexiest Man Alive honoree, bought some lady a new car after hitting her vehicle from behind in an accident, as he was driving in Pennabilli, Italy.

Clooney accepted the blame for the incident, and when the woman went to pick up her car from the mechanic, she discovered that Clooney had replaced her Lancia Ypsilon with a brand new one. Cost? $28,000!

How about that, huh?

How About A Coffin Couch?

"We at Coffincouches.com have the mindset of thinking "Green" and we know it is different but we strongly believe in recycling. Our niche happens to be 18 gauge steel coffins which we collected from local funeral homes primarily in Southern California. It is a health and safety law that funeral homes cannot resell used coffins to the general public. We approached funeral directors with the attitude of recycling."

Interesting, if not morbid! A couch that was once a coffin! Upon initially reading the company's website intro above, I had to pause and ponder - used coffins? What the hell is a used coffin? Aren't they supposed to be buried under several feet of dirt? Is there actually an industry that unearths coffins with human remains still inside, in order to retool each coffin, creating couches out of them? WTF?

But after further reading, I learned that apparently, these used coffins are not used for burial "due to slight cosmetic inconsistencies."

Phewwww! That's certainly good to know! These blemished cases are instead modified into what you see above and below - coffin couches!
And how much do each of these babies cost? About $3,500. No info on how well they're selling. But if anyone out there owns one, please let the rest of us know!

Check out CoffinCouches.com for more morbidity.

- Stolen - In 1990, in the early morning hours after St. Patrick’s Day, thieves disguised as policemen gained access into Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner museum and successfully executed the largest art heist in modern history. STOLEN brings the audience on a journey to understand not just a crime, but also the nature of beauty itself - its fragility and its power.
- Charlie Chaplin: The Forgotten Years: Charles Chaplin's later life, after being forced to leave the USA in 1952.
- Protagonist: What do a terrorist, kung-fu master, gay evangelical minister, and a bank robber have in common?
- Super Size Me: (I'm sure everyone has heard of this one) Morgan Spurlock eats a McDonald's-only diet for thirty days straight and monitors the effects on his mind and body.
- American Ruling Class: Satire that explores our country’s most taboo topic: class, the presence of an elite in our nominally democratic republic. Harper’s Magazine editor Lewis Lapham takes two young Ivy-League graduates on a tour of the corridors of power and their own career possibilities. Along the way they meet an all-star cast, including, among many others, former cabinet secretaries, corporate mandarins, newspaper publishers, and journalists. By story’s end, the graduates’ choice of career takes on great weight: will they try to save the world, or rule it?

John McCain: "I Don't Know How Many Houses I Own"

When you don't know how many homes you own, it's a clear indication that you own too many, especially given the current state of the American housing market.

John McCain said in a recent
interview with Politico on Wednesday that he was uncertain how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own.

"I think — I'll have my staff get to you," McCain told Politico. "It's condominiums where — I'll have them get to you."

Newsweek estimated this summer that the couple owns at least seven properties.

In recent weeks, Democrats have stepped up their efforts to caricature McCain as the real elitist, given his outlandishly rich lifestyle, as a kind of payback for portraying Obama as the disconnected snob.

Here's a video, titled McCain's Mansions, released last week by Brave New Films and SEIU:

UPDATE: Christopher Scott Cherot Lives!

A few weeks ago I posted a "missing persons" alert for Hav Plenty writer/director, Christopher Scott Cherot (You can read that entry HERE).

Yesterday, reader Naoe posted a comment with a link to a press release from July detailing Mr Cherot's current adventures - a film called The Untitled Bathroom Project, described as a "don’t-judge-a-book-by-it’s-cover comedy about one woman’s unforgettable experience in a ladies’ bathroom." I'm assuming it's a feature-length production, but the press release doesn't say.

The film, which will be funded with "financial support from family, friends, colleagues and business associates," is set to begin shooting this fall, under the umbrella of 2 newly formed indie production shingles - Apphia Productions, created by Délé Ogundiran and NeW•YiLLy Entertainment run by Adenrele Ojo - both Los Angeles-based movie producers.

No other info was provided, but you can read the entire press release here:

Paging Hollywood's Black Elite...!

Talking about his upcoming $36 Million biopic of prominent Haitian revolution leader Toussaint L'Ouverture, while at a recent film seminar in Paris, Danny Glover said of his fund-seeking tribulations in America and Europe: "Producers said, 'it's a nice project, a great project . . . where are the white heroes?'"

Do those alabaster suits in Hollywood really STILL say things like that? I mean, really?! Essentially, they want to rewrite history, right? It's so freaking ridiculous that one can only laugh at the idiocy of it all! I'd never survive within their system... I'd probably bitchslap the jackass who asks me a question like that... or at the very least, spit some venom his way.

As previously reported, Venezuelan socialist leader Hugo Chavez gave $18 million to finance half of the project. The rest was supposed to come from a distributor, but according to Glover, no one in Hollywood was interested, stating, "I couldn't get the money here. I couldn't get the money in Britain. I went to everybody.. The first question you get is, 'Is it a black film? It's not going to do good in Europe, it's not going to do good in Japan.' Somebody has to prove that to be a lie."

Paging Will Smith... Oprah Winfrey... Denzel Washington... Eddie Murphy... can somebody lend this man a dollar... a dime... a nickle... a penny... something... so that he can get this film made, please? We're talking about a film about a man who was born a slave and would eventually lead a slave rebellion to victory over the Europeans, abolishing slavery in the region, and establishing Haiti as the first post-colonial independent black-led nation in the world! Come on folks!

All White Men Look Alike

But I suppose it's better to be mobbed by adoring fans of the person they think you look like, as opposed to hearing the infamous "you fit the description..." while being slammed on the hood of a pig wagon! And just in case you too are fooled by their *unmistakable* resemblance... the "idol" below is Stephen Parry - former British middle-distance swimmer and currently sports Journalist for the BBC - not Michael Phelps.

Actors - An Endangered Species

'Emily', the woman in the below video animation, is not real. She was created using a new modeling technology from a company called Image Metrics that enables the most minute details of facial expression to be recreated. She is considered to be one of the first animations to breakthrough a long-standing barrier known as 'uncanny valley' - which refers to the perception that animation looks less realistic as it approaches human likeness.

What do you think? Towards the end of the clip, the real Emily is shown for comparison.

Where The Millionaires Are

According to new report by the I.R.S., the state of California boasts the most millionaires - 428,000 (more than a fifth of the nation’s total). Following in a distant second place is Florida with 199,000 residents with a net worth of $1.5 million or more, and then (surprisingly) New York with a paltry 168,000! Given the ever-rising costs of living in my home state (New York), I'd expect that we'll be at the top of the list - not that it's necessarily a designation to be proud of. Although I should note that California does house many of those techie millionaires and billionaires. And Florida is of course a haven for wealthy retirees (they also don't pay income tax down there).

For the envious, don't sweat it - a million just doesn't buy what it used to anymore. Nowadays you've got to be at least in the centi club to make much of a splash!

Wonders Of The World

Scary isn't it? No, it's not a Photoshop job. This here is known as a Coconut Crab - said to be the largest land-living arthropod in the world, which can weigh as much as 37 pounds, with a leg-span as wide as 3 1/2 feet. They are called Coconut Crabs for a reason - coconuts are their favored food item. They use their strong massive claws to break coconuts into smaller pieces for easier consumption. Imagine what they could do to your head! *Shudder*

Thankfully these babies are local to areas in the South Pacific Ocean, where they are seen as both pets (???) and dinner - a delicacy and an aphrodisiac, with a taste similar to lobster and crab meat. That's a shitload of crab meat! If I ever saw one of these things up close and personal, I think I'd scream like a little girl!

How Infuriating!

I hope the man in this video is first caught by a group of vigilantes, and is beaten mercilessly, until he's almost unrecognizable, before being left at the doorstep of the nearest police station!

If the video isn't clear enough, here's a written explanation:

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — Cops released video on Monday capturing a punk's attack on an 85-year-old woman. The surveillance video shows the robber following Lilian France into the elevator of a Crown Heights building, and then choking her from behind.

She was left panting on the floor as he ran off with $900, and her cane, as the video shows.

Police believe the cowardly thug has gone after nearly a dozen seniors in Crown Heights, Kensington and Flatbush during the last few months.

The robber — described as a man in his 20's or 30's — likes to follow his prey into their apartment lobbies to share an elevator ride, said police. Then, "he approaches them from behind... Either knocks them over or puts them in a chokehold."

Anyone with information about his whereabouts should call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS, or text in their tips to 274637 and then enter TIP577.

There is a reward of up to $12,000 if he is captured.

Here's the video:

New Black Cable TV Network? Hmm...

I think it's clear that there's STILL an opening for a black TV network, despite the existence of both BET and TV-One. I'm surprised that there haven't been more attempts, given the disappointing reception that the currently operating stations have received over the years - notably BET. If I had the resources, or access to the necessary resources, I would have certainly taken on the challenge. There's a lot of room for improvement and eventual financial success, because we are still without a definite crowned champion in the field, which makes it even more attractive for anyone willing and able to enter the market, and eventually dominate - given the right mix of style and substance in its content, of course.

Will Master P... I mean Percy Miller's venture become what we all wish BET and TV-One already were?

Who knows? We'll learn in time. But his quote stating, "I believe that there is a market in our community for a new diverse network that provides a new brand of superior programming that caters to all aspects of television, from reality to original programming," is inspiring, and hopeful. Let's hope that he keeps that promise!!

The new cable network called Better Black Television (BBTV), is set to debut in 2009, and will provide "positive content for a black and brown culture," and unofficially compete with BET for viewers.

Content will include "a wide range of scripted, unscripted and news programming, including drama and comedy series, movies, animation, reality, politics, sports and entertainment news, children's educational and teen programming, as well as "responsible hip-hop music and videos."

The fact that Denzel Washington is on the network's advisory board, is somewhat encouraging. I certainly wouldn't expect Denzel to attach himself and his reputation to anything that didn't meet certain standards... but who knows?

BBTV's programming in the works include the following:

* "Sunset and Vine": Video show that will showcase the top hip-hop and R&B acts as well as play classic videos.

* "One Shot Comedy Show": Comedy show featuring established and upcoming comedians.

* "Gee Gee the Giraffe": Children's educational show (will air Saturday morning on BBTV Kids).

* "Manage Your Money": Featuring financially successful people lending tips to promote financial literacy.

* "Karma TV Show": Bilingual soap opera with an African-American and Latino cast.

* "What's Cooking TV Show": Talk show that covers wide aspects of entertainment and current events while cooking healthy, budget-conscious meals.

* "The Black List Movies": Film showcase featuring classic and contemporary movies, as well as original BBTV productions.

As I said above... we'll just have to wait and see. Profit is king, so, while P. Miller might have the best of intentions for the station and its potential audience going into this venture, profit will always supersede substance. I think anyone who seriously wants to engender change should be prepared to lose a lot of money, at least initially, and ride out some hard times early on, be patient, and in time, audiences will respond, provided the content remains prime. But I certainly applaud the man for the effort.

O! Say Can You See...

Can you answer all 3 of these questions?

1. Which party now controls Congress?
2. Who is the current U.S. secretary of state?

3. Name the new prime minister of Great Britain.

I certainly hope so!

According to a Pew Survey on News Consumption (taken every two years and released this afternoon), the national average for answering the three questions was only 18%!!

Let me repeat that again... 18-freaking-percent! Are you kidding me?

According to the release, even though most Americans surveyed scored poorly on the test, a vast majority of them actually believe that they follow national news closely - obviously not close enough! Maybe this shouldn't be a surprise, but it's rather pathetic and embarrassing.

Obama Too Fit To Be President?

I'm still laughing at the ridiculousness of this article from the Wall Street Journal (I'd expect a lot better from them, but maybe this is indicative of Murdoch's influence - remember THIS?). It's a couple of weeks old, but I'm just now seeing it, so I'm posting for any one else who didn't catch it.

Get your laugh on below while I go get myself a shrimp salad sandwich...

Speaking to donors at a San Diego fund-raiser last month, Barack Obama reassured the crowd that he wouldn't give in to Republican tactics to throw his candidacy off track.

"Listen, I'm skinny but I'm tough," Sen. Obama said.

But in a nation in which 66% of the voting-age population is overweight and 32% is obese, could Sen. Obama's skinniness be a liability? Despite his visits to waffle houses, ice-cream parlors and greasy-spoon diners around the country, his slim physique just might have some Americans wondering whether he is truly like them.

The candidate has been criticized by opponents for appearing elitist or out of touch with average Americans. A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll conducted in July shows Sen. Obama still lags behind Republican John McCain among white men and suburban women who say they can't relate to his background or perceived values.

"He's too new ... and he needs to put some meat on his bones," says Diana Koenig, 42, a housewife in Corpus Christi, Texas, who says she voted for Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary.

"I won't vote for any beanpole guy," another Clinton supporter wrote last week on a Yahoo politics message board.

Trump Bails Out McMahon And I'm Puzzled Why

So.... Billionaire Donald Trump has agreed to "save" Ed McMahon from home foreclosure by buying McMahon's house (essentially paying off the $4.8 Million he owes to Countrywide) and then lease the property to McMahon?

For those who haven't been keeping up with the horror, Ed McMahon, the former Johnny Carson sidekick, and sweepstakes pitchman, defaulted on his multimillion-dollar Beverly Hills home, earlier this year, and has been fighting foreclosure. Apparently, even the wealthy, like McMahon, have been affected by the weak economy, and unsettling housing market, thanks in large part to subprime fever. McMahon had just 2 weeks left to sell his house before the bank repossessed it.

The man should have lost his house like so many other less fortunate Americans did, BUT, Trump simply couldn't let that happen. The kicker? Donald Trump doesn't even know Ed McMahon, stating, "I don't know the man, but I grew up watching him on TV... When I was at the Wharton School of Business... I'd watch him every night. How could this happen?"

Yeah Ed - how could this happen?

In reading this, the first thing I thought was to say, hey Donald, there are so many people facing similar dilemmas - people who are in far worse predicaments than Mr McMahon will ever know. There are some who have even killed themselves for fear of losing their property. Yes, it's true. So, why not take that $4.8 Million that you will be using to "save" McMahon from repossession, and instead invest in those average, everyday Americans, with homes worth far less than McMahon's, so that they don't lose their properties to foreclosure. I think McMahon will be just fine even if he did lose his home. He has lots of rich friends, and I'm sure he won't go wanting for very long... unlike John and Jane Doe who have a modest 3 bedroom home in middle America, with 4 kids, a midsize car or two, and who owe a fraction of what McMahon owes, but just aren't able to pay. In fact, with $4.8 Million, you could "save" a lot of people from losing their homes, as opposed to one privileged, washed up TV personality who, for some reason, couldn't manage his many millions well enough, and who I have absolutely no pity for.

Help those who really need to help Donald! You won't get a pat on the back from me for this supposed act of altruism!

Good Idea/Bad Idea: In-Car Wi-Fi

As if drivers don't already have enough distractions... here's another that's on the way:

- Chrysler is poised to be the first car manufacturer to offer built-in internet access in its vehicles, starting in 2009. The service, called Uconnect Web, uses existing wireless data networks for internet access it then shares with devices in the car via Wi-Fi, essentially turning your car into one big hot spot. The core device will cost $499 to install.

Olympics: An Olympic Diet

American Olympic swimmer, and multiple medal winner, Michael Phelps's Olympic recipe for success:

- It involves eating a staggering 12,000 calories a day. By comparison, the average man of the same age needs to ingest about 2,000 calories a day.
- He starts off his day by eating three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.
- He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.
- At lunch, Phelps gobbles up a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread - capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.
- For dinner, Phelps really loads up on the carbs with a pound of pasta and an entire pizza!! He washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

Wow! I guess you can eat like that when you're putting your body through a rigorous five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen, and all the while still be able to look like this:

"What's So Scary About Michelle Obama?"

I have no idea. But Radar Magazine wants to know below... asking questions like, "Why does she hate whitey?", and "Why is she so angry?"... also included is a side-by-side Hillary Clinton comparison. Get your chuckles below...

- According to a recent poll, Michelle Obama's so-called favorability rating is abysmal (35 percent aren't feeling her, while only 30 percent are). Among whites the numbers are even worse. Since the would-be first lady has yet to eviscerate a baby panda on live TV (okay, that we know of), it's hard not to wonder whether something else is going on. Something shhh!—racial.

If nothing else, the hysterical media reaction to the notion of a fist-bumping first lady (this Harvard-educated attorney calls people "whitey"? Really?) serves as a reminder that on the rare occasions when a black woman has been a central figure in a presidential campaign, it's more often been as an object of scorn than of praise. For every Shirley Chisholm, the New York City congresswoman who made a White House run in 1972, there have been plenty more sisters getting demonized for political gain.

It all goes back to "this wench," as one proto-tabloid hack dubbed slave Sally Hemings in 1802. Contemporary scandal-sheet accounts claiming that Thomas Jefferson had taken Hemings as "a concubine" were prime oppo research fodder for his Federalist opponents.

Slavery Was Good For The Black Man

Somebody must have drank a little too much ganja tea... Dr James Watson is probably applauding right about now.

From our Jamaican brothers and sisters at the Jamaican Observer, published August 9th:

Slavery was good for the black man

As we celebrate emancipation and independence, we are being reminded of the horrors of slavery. According to our leaders, academics and others, slavery was the worst institution ever created. However, while it is popular for most to agree with this claim, I beg to disagree. Indeed, contrary to the belief that slavery was bad for us blacks, I believe that slavery was good for us.

Have we ever stopped to consider where we black people, especially those of us in the West, would be right now if it weren't for the Atlantic Slave Trade? What state do you think black Africa would be in today? Do you think that we would have been better off without slavery? I don't think so!

When the Europeans went to Africa to buy slaves, what did they find? They found a society and people vastly inferior to theirs. While the Europeans had emerged from their feudal practices, our ancestors in Africa, for the most part, had not developed for many centuries. We did not understand the concept of nation or government. Science and technology (and innovations in these areas) were non-existent in black Africa of the 15th and 16th centuries. Indeed, as a people, we had no sense of self-identity. In many respects, we were uncivilized.

Slavery was our most important contact with modernity. It is through this "most heinous system ever created" that we blacks were able to understand some of the principles of global trade. Our ancestors were introduced to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade between Europe, Africa and the West Indies. Black Africa's part in the trade was the importation of European technology and the export of slaves. The importation of European technology was important - even though the Africans did not appreciate this importance at first. The export of slaves was also very important, especially for us in the West.

As time went on, we blacks, both in Africa and especially in the Caribbean were, in many ways, being Europeanised and thus civilized.
