Denzel And Batman In '28th Amendment'

In May I posted an entry on the very first pairing of Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise in a film called, The 28th Amendment, about a president who comes to find out that the United States is actually controlled by a super secret organization who will assassinate anyone who gets in its way. Cruise was to play the president and Denzel would play the head of the super secret organization who attempts to assasinate the president.

However, Tom Cruise has now jumped ship, and will no longer be starring in the film, due to some contract negotiation difficulties (probably monetary). And taking his place, as reported by MovieHole.net, will be none other than the Dark Knight himself, Christian Bale!

MovieHole says that Warner Bros has made Bale an offer he can't refuse - to take Cruise’s place in the film. So, we'd see a Washington/Bale pairing - also a first!

As an aside, I suddenly feel like playing Six Degrees of Tyler Perry. I feel like I should have some kind of game show music here. I think I might play the game for every actor I name on this blog from here on... or until someone tells me to stop :o) If you don't know what Six Degrees Of Tyler Perry is, CLICK HERE. Except this time, I'm breaking the game wide open, and instead of only connecting Perry to black performers, I'm going to try to connect him to all performers regardless of race in 6 or less steps.

So, Christian Bale: Bale was in Shaft with Vanessa Willams (1), who was in Soul Food with Michael Beach (2), who was in First Sunday with Kat Williams (3), who was in The Perfect Holiday with Gabrielle Union (4), who was in Daddy's Little Girls directed by Tyler Perry (5). Who would have thought Batman could be connected to Madea in 5 steps!!

Here's something to keep an eye on as the project develops...

Columbia and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi are reuniting on The Given Day, an adaptation of an upcoming novel by Dennis Lehane, an author who's seen 3 of his other novels adapted - specifically the Clint Eastwood directed Mystic River, Ben Affleck's Gone Baby Gone, and Martin Scorsese has nearly completed production on Shutter Island, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the starring role.

Raimi will direct the yet to be published, The Given Day, which tells the story of two families – one black and one white – "swept up in a maelstrom of revolutionaries and anarchists, immigrants and ward bosses, Brahmins and “ordinary” citizens, all engaged in a battle for survival and power, in 1919 Boston, with the city in turmoil as soldiers are returning home from WWI, having brought back an epidemic of Spanish influenza."

The novel is described as a “gritty," "political," "ambitious," and "epic," and will feature the most influential figures of the day – Babe Ruth, Eugene O’Neill, NAACP founder W.E.B. Du Bois, Calvin Coolidge and many others.

No word yet on when this will go into production, or which actors are being considered for what roles. The book hasn't even been published yet!! However, for obvious reasons, I'll certainly be interested in reading it when it is published by HarperCollins on Sept. 23. You can preeorder your copy HERE.

Laurence Fishburne Is The Alchemist

I didn't know Laurence Fisburne previously owned the rights to adapt the bestselling novel, The Alchemist, for the screen, and has apparently been sitting on the project for several years! Why? Fishburne had funding for the film with money from Abu Dhabi business men and a Japanese media company called the Kadokawa Group (I didn't realize Fish had connections like that). However, the deal went sour thanks to disagreements over the script, which increased the film's budget to $100 million! I guess the financiers said, "no thanks Fish. Too much loot!"

Well... riding in on his pale white horse to save the day is none other than jolly Harvey Weinstein, who has reportedly purchased the rights to the book from Fishburne, for a tidy $3 million sum, and hired an Oscar-winning screenwriter to pen an adapted screenplay, scrapping the version Fishburne already has written.

However, Fishburne will still remain on the project as the director and producer, as well as star in the film! I haven't read The Alchemist, although I've heard lots of wonderful things from those I know who have; but given that the story is about a young Spaniard who embarks on a quest to find a hidden treasure within the Egyptian pyramids, I don't think Fishburne will be assuming the lead role. So what character will he play, while also producing and directing the film? I guess I should go read the book now!
