Vogue - The "Black Issue"

VOGUE Italia is set to release it's so-called "Black Issue" this week - essentially a copy featuring all black models within its pages - apparently a first for an internationally known, respected and influential fashion magazine like Vogue.

For those who aren't aware - this issue was created as a response to leading British photographer Nick Knight's statement earlier this year that the fashion industry is steeped in racism, and that black girls are "completely under-represented," calling it "shocking and atrocious," and emphasizing the importance of using black models and models of different ethnic backgrounds.

One response (the current issue of Vogue Italia) came from an unlikely source, Franca Sozzani, editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia. Although Sozzani admitted that the issue might not be popular amongst some xenophobic Italians, but stating, "I don't care. I think it is not my problem if they don't like it – it's their problem."

In April, The UK Independent published a story titled, Black is finally in fashion at Vogue, which talks about Knight's accusations and Vogue Italia's response. You can read it in its entirety HERE.

The "Black Issue" of Vogue Italia hits newstands this week in Europe - specifically tomorrow. It should be released in the US soon after. Could be something of a collector's item, I suppose.

The image above is what the cover will look like - it'll be a fold-out.

They eschew our beauty, yet constantly try to emulate it. How ironic. In any event, this will bring some much needed VISUAL attention to the issue.

I love the second pic. LOL.

I think The "Black With Lots Of Weave" Issue is more accurate.

Wonder if they have other versions of Black inside?

They do all look the same to me. I suppose when the issue crosses over to our shores, we'll be able to get a closer look and flip through the pages within, hoping that we'll see some variety.

Though Vogue isn't a regular read, I'll probably buy a copy for posterity.

LOL! Loving IW's comment about the weave! I doubt there'll be many 'natural' heads in there, unless Alec Wek is in it - which she should be, as one of the more successful black models of her time, despite her not quite adhereing to a white standard of chocolate covered beauty.

What's the betting there'll be at least one tiger/leopard skin pic...? Probably the only one with a 'nappy' headed negress in it!

It is fabulous that the July issue is the all black issue, black models need just as much coverage as everyone else! Although Vogue is not the major arbiter of equality, but at least it is a step in the right direction. If you guys love women of color in fashion then you guys would love Bianca! I’m currently working with Toyota and I’m really hyped when it comes to spreading the word about the new interactive If Looks Could Kill webisodes. They follow an aspiring fashion assistant who is a prime example of a woman whos’ got it going on. I’m talking the dream job, man who’s got all the ladies drooling, and the spice to keep it all together. Think James Bond meets Sanaa Lathan in Something New.
You’ll have to see what I’m talking about. I can’t wait to read your thoughts on the first episode so we can chit-chat abut what’s really going on. Don’t be surprised when you find yourself being reeled in like bait. That will make two of us!
I hope I didn’t overstep my bounds by directly contacting you. After viewing your blog and seeing how hip to the game you are when it comes to what’s hot and current, I figured this would be something that would catch your interest.
Looking forward to the girl talk!
