We've Come For What's Ours!

"Let's get into the inner workings and the meaning of this. Let's get into the inner workings and the meaning of a black revolution and why black people have a right to take what's theirs. So the concept is this, basically: The whole black nation has to be put together as a black army and we're going to walk on this nation. We're going to walk on this racist power structure. And we're going to say to the whole damn government, "Stick 'em up, motherfucker. This is a hold-up! We come for what's ours!"" BOBBY SEALE, Co-Founder, Black Panther Party [at a rally]

From Aljazeera:
Shell facility attacked in Nigeria

An armed group seeking a greater share of oil wealth in Nigeria says it has destroyed part of Shell's operation in the Niger Delta.

The claim came days after the group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend), declared an "oil war" on foreign companies working in the country.

"A very major trunk crude oil pipeline we believe may belong to both Agip and Shell has been blown up today," the group said in an emailed statement on Wednesday.
It is the third attack in 48 hours on a Shell installation.

Sarah Simpson, a journalist reporting from Lagos, told Al Jazeera: "Shell are still investigating into Mend's report, but they are not yet able to comment on the situation.

"If indeed there has been an attack, it could be a significant pipeline. Most likely a pipeline carrying crude oil, which could affect Nigeria's oil exports.

GOP Compares Obama To Hasselhoff

sseOh man... it's obvious that the Republicans have completely run out of ideas, and have not much else to sting Obama's reputation with.

Altogether now... say it loud and say it proud... President Barack Obama!

From HuffPo:

- In the clearest sign yet that the Republicans have all but given up on even pretending that they have ideas worth selling to the American people, the Republican National Committee has sunk time and money into this ad, their "best guess" at what an "Obama ad in Berlin" might look like. Apparently, their best guess is founded on the twin precepts that Germans enjoy techno music and that in a crowd of 200,000 people, it's possible to find someone with "Marxist" friends. Even though it has nothing to do with Germans or Marxism or Berlin, the makers of this ad saw fit to include a woefully dated kicker of Obama yelling, "I'm king of the world!" Appropriately: a Titanic joke from a bunch of titanic jokes.

BET - Making Moves?

The network recently announced 2 new programming efforts scheduled to begin airing this fall.

What are they?

First: BET News will launch a new weekly political talk show called, The Truth With Jeff Johnson, which will premiere on Friday, August 15 at 11:00 P.M. This program is being described as "provocative" and "will use a mix of investigative reporting and one-on-one interviews with leading experts to review the week's events and examine exactly what the top headlines mean for the Black community." I don't like that title. It sounds comical - "The Truth With Jeff Johnson." I can already hear the jokes: "The TRUPH With Jeff Johnson." It doesn't make me want to tune in and watch BET. I'd change it - just my suggestion of course. BET has certainly gone lacking in their news and views department. They've always needed to step it up in that regard, and maybe this is a move in the right direction... maybe. It could be fun to watch a Bill O'Reilly pugilist-type of show on BET.

Second: BET and Marvel Animation are teaming up to produce an animated series based on the legendary black superhero, The Black Panther. Casting is already underway and the premiere is scheduled for the first quarter of 2009. A special sneak preview will premiere at Comic-Con this month during BET's panel on Saturday, July 26. The series will be adapted directly from the first six issues of the Marvel Comic written by Reginald Hudlin.

And there ya have it!

Each obviously is certainly topical and not coincidental. With Election 08 in full swing, BET probably realized how thin their news coverage has been, especially with a black man in Barack Obama enjoying an unprecedented amount of success in his campaign. How could they not make political news coverage a priority?

And with super hero movie fever pervasive throughout Hollywood and its reach, and with lots of talk of the lack of black super heroes getting celluloid attention, thanks in part to Hancock mania, a TV series about a black super hero on the nation's most prominent black tv station, is, as they say, a no-brainer! Something tells me that if the animated series draws a considerable audience rating, the Black Panther movie that's been rumored to be in consideration, will be fast-tracked!

Another POV On Independent Film Distribution

On a panel at the recent Los Angeles Film Festival, Matt Dentler, the former SWSX Film Festival program director who is now at Cinetic Media, laid out his views on the state of indie film digital distribution and what's to come. It's an hour long, but worth a listen.

See-Through Scanners Installed In US Airports!

There's been talk about this for years now, and it's finally come to fruition! I grabbed a few notable quips from the full article which you can read in its entirety HERE and added my $.02 along the way.

Security scanners which can see through passengers' clothing and reveal details of their body underneath are being installed in 10 US airports, the US Transportation Security Administration said Tuesday. A random selection of travelers getting ready to board airplanes in Washington, New York's Kennedy, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Miami and Detroit will be shut in the glass booths while a three-dimensional image is made of their body beneath their clothes...

While it allows the security screeners -- looking at the images in a separate room -- to clearly see the passenger's sexual organs as well as other details of their bodies, the passenger's face is blurred (I guess that's supposed to be reassuring!)...

"People have no idea how graphic the images are," said Barry Steinhardt, director of the technology and liberty program at the ACLU.

The ACLU said in a statement that passengers expecting privacy underneath their clothing "should not be required to display highly personal details of their bodies such as evidence of mastectomies, colostomy appliances, penile implants, catheter tubes and the size of their breasts or genitals as a pre-requisite to boarding a plane."

Besides masking their faces, the TSA says on its website, the images made "will not be printed stored or transmitted." (And how long will it take before that rule is broken, and some jackass finds a way to download and transfer images on his/her USB device and makes them public on YouTube? Are we a police state yet? Well, let's see: "Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism." Check. "Disdain for the importance of human rights." Check. "Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause." Check. "The supremacy of the military/avid militarism." Check. "A controlled mass media." Check. "Obsession with national security." Check. "Religion and ruling elite tied together. " Check. "Power of corporations protected." Check. "Rampant cronyism and corruption." Check. "Fraudulent elections.' Check. And there's a lot more.
