The Chinese Are Coming! The Chinese Are Coming!

Well, actually, they're already there, and have been there for a few years now, and it looks like they're going to be there for awhile. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, start HERE before continuing.

China plans to construct railway across Sub-Saharan Africa

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - Plans are under way for the Chinese to construct a railway line cutting across Sub-Saharan Africa from Angola on the western seaboard to Tanzania on the eastern coast of the continent, sources say here Saturday.

According to Dr. Martyn Davies, an expert on China and Africa relations of Stellenbosch University in South Africa, with the Chinese economy’s growth firmly hinged on Africa’s natural resources, the need to easily move commodities from the continent will spawn massive infrastructure initiatives by the Chinese.

’’The railway line, which will run from Luanda to Dar-es-Salaam will reduce the relevance of Durban and Mombasa as key landing ports for traders from the east,’’ says Dr Davies...

... In addition, the China International Fund Ltd based in Hong Kong is undertaking a $300 million rehabilitation of the Benguela railway line in Angola, which was destroyed during the civil war.

I know so little about the Chinese "invasion" but I plan to change that effective immediately. There's something going on here with some long term ramifications that may be to the detriment of Africa and Africans.

These stories, as well as ones told to me personally from family and friends trilling about how things are developing, and how there are even Chinese people living there now!!

There's nothing wrong with making a decent crust, but I can't help feel like this is the second round of the scramble for Africa... Last time it was Europe, now it's China, India and America...

Last time it was civilisation and religion, this time it's globalisation and investment.

    *Sigh*

@ echo - There's definitely something at work here... we'll see what in coming years.

@ Wendy - yup, they're living there now. I'd actually love to go back "home" for a short period so that I can witnes these developments firsthand.
