Can We All Just Get Along #1 - Natalie Cole To Amy Winehouse: You're Crazy! Give Back Those Grammys!

Not black film related, but I just wondered...

I've never been an Amy Winehouse fan. Nothing personal... just haven't heard anything she's done that I like. I could care less about her personal struggles, and they have no influence on my lack of interest in her music.

This will probably be the only time I'll ever mention her on this blog :o)

She won 5 Grammy Awards last night, and apparently, there are some people out there who don't think she deserved any of them, because of her personal struggles. One of those people is Natalie Cole.

From FOX News (Yeah, I visit Rupert's domain from time to time):

--- Not everyone was happy about Amy Winehouse’s big win at the Grammys Sunday night.

“I don’t think she deserved it,” previous Grammy-winning singer Natalie Cole said. “I think she needs to get her life together first, and then get the awards later."

Winehouse took a break from rehab to perform via satellite from London at the Grammys and collect five awards.

Cole also called Winehouse “crazy,” and complained that we are teaching youngsters that they can get rewarded for bad behavior.

Winehouse won in the categories of best female artist, best female pop vocal performance, best song, record of the year and best pop vocal album ---

So, dost Natalie Cole protest too much, or is her criticism warranted? Do you give a damn?

The world loves a young, white chick in distress...

A few years ago, british tabloids couldn't get enough of Kate Moss' trials and tribulations, much like Amy's, surrounding drugs and druggy boyfriends. Despite being exposed on front page news, she regained some, and more, of the lucrative contracts she lost and somehow became cooler...!

And am I the only one who's noticed the trend for white, british songstresses with black, retro sounds...? Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse... Duffy. I don't think you guys in the US have been acquainted with Duffy yet. She has that whole 60s Motown sound going on. She has a good voice, but no better than many a black chick I've seen at open mic nights...

Oh, to be a white chick (preferably British?). They just can't seem do any wrong! No, no, no!

    :)

I guess I should let it be known, however, that I became an Amy Winehouse fan with her first album, with 'Stronger Than Me' being a favourite...

    What...!?

    :D

Interesting commentary from Natalie Cole since she is a recovering addict herself. Of course her ish wasn't widely known until she outted herself many years after she got clean.

As for her criticism being warranted...it's a performance award, not a Good Behavior/Good Citizen Award. How many folks would have been stripped of their Grammys if we accounted for drug abuse, crazy behavior, statutory rape, wife-beating...

Why single out the crazy white girl? :-)

There is a history of creative artists and drug abuse, going back for decades. Didn't Brad Renfro die just two weeks ago from a heroin overdose... and there was Billi Holiday, Janice Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, John Belushi, River Phoenix, ...

    Wasn't she a cokehead for a minute?

I think she should sit down and shut up and save the world some other fu*kin way.
