COMING SOON - “Tyson”
soon
Who knew that NBA star Carmelo Anthony owned a production company? I had absolutely no idea! Good to know though... and, by all accounts, it looks like he may have a winner in his company's first production - the James Toback directed Mike Tyson documentary that received a standing ovation after its screening at the Cannes Film Festival last May.
The film, aptly called Tyson, has been picked up for North American distribution by Sony Picture Classics.

I'll see it whenever Sony gets around to releasing it!

Sony Classics Confirms “Tyson” for North America
Confirming an acquisition initially hinted at way back at the Cannes Film Festival last May, Sony Pictures Classics has picked up North American rights to writer-director James Toback’s doc “Tyson,” which will have its North American premiere at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival. The film is the first of NBA all-star Carmelo Anthony’s Krossover Productions. “Tyson” is described as an “intimate and moving no-holds-barred portrait of a humbled Mike Tyson told in the words of the former heavyweight champion.
In the film, Mike Tyson examines his own life in and out of the ring with a candor, eloquence and vulnerability that is by turns poignant, funny and never less than brutally honest. The doc ranges from Mike’s earliest memories of growing up on the mean streets of Brooklyn through his entry into the world of boxing, including his rollercoaster ride through the funhouse of worldwide fame and his fortunes won and lost. SPC is eyeing a spring theatrical release.
“The effort to portray a complex, internationally iconographic figure in a stylistically originally way has proved a far more ambitious, but far more satisfying task than I had envisioned when I started shooting over two years ago,” commented Toback in a statement. “I trust [SPC’s] Michael [Barker] and Tom [Bernard], whom I have known for twenty years, to send out and guide the film with passion, intelligence and twists of invention."
